Our cooperative tackles the environmental and ethical problems linked to electronics. We start from the observation that planned obsolescence is intrinsically tied to the sales business model. When you sell a product, you have an interest in the customer replacing it at some point. Commown offers only long-term rental, and therefore has every interest in making its devices last as long as possible. On the hardware side, if a product is faulty, we repair it or recover all the parts that still work in order to repair other devices. By remaining the owners of our devices, we remain responsible for their recycling and make sure that any defective part will be recycled. On the software side, free software allows us to provide updates to devices well beyond the end of the support provided by the manufacturer. The Fairphone: the most eco-designed smartphones on the market. Indeed, they are easily repairable thanks to their various replaceable modules. In addition, Fairphone pays attention to where components come from. Various other products such as PCs, tablets and headphones, which we always select on eco-design criteria. Many metals are needed to manufacture smartphones and PCs. They are produced in disastrous conditions that do not take into account the cost of the environmental and societal impacts of mining. Hence our selection of suppliers of the most eco-designed products possible. The intersection of these two axes allows us to offer a service focused solely on extending the lifespan of products, down to spare parts.
