Why optimise the lifespan of IT equipment? Digital technology accounts for 3.8% of global emissions, i.e. 1,400 million tonnes of greenhouse gases worldwide, as stated by GreenIT, a media outlet specialising in responsible digital technology, in its 2019 study. According to ADEME, making digital equipment last longer is the most effective way to reduce its impacts. For example, extending the use of a tablet or computer from 2 to 4 years improves its environmental footprint by 50%. How can you adopt this eco-friendly habit? Several methods can extend the lifespan of IT equipment: - Rent rather than buy: some IT equipment rental companies give products a second life once the rental ends, which generates no end-of-use waste. - Train staff in good practices to maintain the lifespan of products: regular software updates, closing unused applications, not overloading power sockets, avoiding physical shocks... - Favour repair over throwing the product away when it breaks down - Maintain equipment regularly so that it lasts over time: cleaning fans, checking that equipment is free of dust, because dust build-up can cause overheating...
