Why use a tap with a short-interval motion sensor? This type of tap stops the water flow when hands leave the infrared sensor’s detection area. According to studies by specialist manufacturers, it can save between 50 and 90% of water compared with the conventional mixer tap it replaces. With handwashing taking 30 to 50 seconds for wetting, soaping and rinsing, and ordinary tap flow rates of 10 to 16 litres/min, 2.5 to 8 litres of water are lost if the tap stays open throughout. The tap’s flow rate also matters: specialist models can generally be adjusted between 1.5 and 5 litres/min, allowing further savings. Finally, the power supply is an important criterion. Systems powered by a mini turbine that generates the necessary energy from the flowing water should be preferred.
