What is the environmental impact of internet searches? Digital technology accounts for 3.8% of emissions, or 1,400 million tonnes of greenhouse gases worldwide, according to the 2019 study by GreenIT, a publication specializing in responsible digital technology. Data centres are among the main emitters. They enable us to send emails, watch videos and browse the internet, but also consume 30% of the digital sector’s electricity, according to a CNRS article published in 2018. How can we reduce the environmental impact of using the internet? To limit your digital impact, it is important to: - Enter searches directly in the browser’s navigation bar rather than visiting the search engine homepage - Bookmark frequently visited websites - Use short, precise search terms: the longer a search, the more electricity it consumes - Limit the number of open programs or tabs that are not being used.
