Why keep hens? According to ADEME, 72 kg of food leftovers are wasted per person each year. Hens can eat up to 150 kg of organic waste a year, making them an excellent alternative to compost! A henhouse in a green space reduces waste while preserving biodiversity and providing fresh eggs from well-treated hens. By scratching the topsoil, hens also stop weeds spreading! How? Adopting hens through associations is a positive action. Every 18 months, farmed laying hens are sent to slaughter because regulations require premises to be emptied and cleaned for a sanitary break. Associations rescue these hens and offer them for adoption. Keeping hens then requires very little time: - Feed them a rich, varied diet - Give them clean water - Clean the henhouse regularly for good hygiene Ultimately, it is all common sense!
