Why use rechargeable batteries? There are several reasons to turn to rechargeable batteries. First of all, manufacturing single-use batteries is very energy-intensive. What is more, once used, they are often thrown into ordinary bins or, worse, into the environment. These non-biodegradable batteries can release hazardous substances into the environment such as acid, lead, aluminium, lithium, zinc, etc. This can be very toxic for the environment and also for human health. To avoid this, rechargeable batteries are the solution! Indeed, according to a study commissioned by Uniross (a French company, European leader in rechargeable batteries) and financially supported by ADEME, rechargeable batteries have up to 32 times less impact on the environment than disposable (alkaline) batteries. This same study also showed that: - Rechargeable batteries consume up to 23 times fewer non-renewable natural resources (fossil and mineral) than disposable batteries. This result is explained by the large quantity of disposable batteries that must be manufactured to supply the same amount of energy. - A real saving in packaging waste is possible by buying reusable batteries, since to obtain 1 kWh of energy, only one pack of rechargeable batteries is needed versus 93 packs of disposable batteries. Thus, if all disposable batteries were replaced by rechargeable ones, the production of 99,000 tonnes of waste in Europe and 330,000 tonnes worldwide would be avoided. In addition to these points, they pay for themselves from the fifth use and can be recharged nearly a thousand times!
