“Bue mais pas perdue”: Sorting aluminium cans at source

The “Bue mais pas perdue” initiative is the result of cooperation between two Alsatian organisations located only 2 km from each other, Constellium and the Réseau COCCI. It aims to reduce cans abandoned in the streets and natural environments, give them a second life and create a strong local dynamic through a close territorial network. This organisation limits transport distances and the associated CO₂ emissions, while supporting the local economy and jobs in the area. By taking part in the programme, the professional sets up source sorting of aluminium cans within their organisation to give them a second life and support the local dynamic.

Its features
Environmentally friendly
- Recovery of aluminium cans and contribution to the circular economy Cans from French consumption and sorted at source become resources reused in new production cycles. Indeed, aluminium, an infinitely recyclable material, is recovered, melted and processed at the Constellium site in Neuf-Brisach to give it a second life. - Reduction of waste and pollution of natural environments By sorting aluminium cans at source within their organisation, the participant prevents them from being mixed with residual waste or abandoned in the environment. This reduction in littering helps preserve the cleanliness of the area and limit the risks of soil and water pollution linked to waste being abandoned in the environment. - Cooperation between local and nearby actors
The “Bue mais pas perdue” initiative brings together local actors at every stage of the can’s journey
from the consumer or professional who sorts and drops it off, at the collection point, through to its collection and recovery. This local organisation favours short supply chains, limits the distances travelled and reduces the environmental impact of transport, while contributing to the vitality of the local economy. - Reduced CO₂ emissions thanks to reverse logistics Cans sorted at source are collected by the Réseau COCCI during its usual product deliveries. This organisation is based on the principle of reverse logistics: the vehicles that deliver the products leave with the cans, thus avoiding the need for dedicated rounds. The cans are then consolidated at the Réseau COCCI site before being sent to the recovery operator, which allows flows to be pooled, journeys to be limited and transport-related CO₂ emissions to be reduced.
Second life
The Constellium plant in Neuf-Brisach has set up a unique integrated facility for rolling, finishing and recycling aluminium in order to give aluminium cans a second life. These become coils and sheets for the tin can and food product sectors, the automotive industry (body sheets, heat exchangers and equipment parts), and also for industrial applications.
Solidarity
- A commitment to inclusion The “Bue mais pas perdue” initiative contributes to the employment of workers with disabilities, who take part in the consolidation and compacting of the collected cans.
