What is the environmental impact of emails? According to the latest joint report by ADEME and Arcep, digital technology accounts for around 2.5% of France's carbon footprint each year. A company of 100 people generates 13.6 tonnes of CO2 equivalent every year through its email alone, the equivalent of 14 return flights between Paris and New York. It is therefore essential to lighten your emails. How can the environmental impact of emails be reduced? ADEME recommends several practices to reduce the harmful impact of emails: - Target recipients carefully and remove the attachments from a message you are replying to - Optimise the size of the files sent: compressed files, low-resolution images and PDFs... - Use temporary file-sharing sites rather than sending attachments (e.g. Wetransfer). For the heaviest files, a USB stick is still the ideal solution! - Clean out your mailbox regularly and unsubscribe from unnecessary mailing lists. - Delete sent messages, spam and junk mail. - Empty your trash, to avoid storing useless emails in data centres

- Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions: indeed, every email sent consumes electricity. To produce it, fossil-fuel power plants burn fuels such as coal, oil or gas. These plants emit large quantities of CO2, which are released into the air.
