Why favour fish from sustainable fishing? Sustainable fishing means that the methods used are sustainable and do not impair the reproductive capacity of the target fish species (no overfishing), that the ecosystem is not damaged, and that the proportion of unwanted bycatch (accidental catches) is greatly reduced. It is therefore important to be vigilant when buying fish, all the more so as global demand for fish keeps rising and, to meet it, fish farms are multiplying ... How to choose fish from sustainable fishing? To choose fish from sustainable fishing, it is possible to rely on labels, two in particular: - The MSC label (Marine Stewardship Council) allows consumers to identify with certainty fish, seafood and crustaceans caught sustainably and to fight overfishing. The certification process is extremely strict and monitored by various independent bodies. - The ASC label (Aquaculture Stewardship Council): guarantees consumers that the fish, seafood and crustaceans they choose come from responsible fishing and aquaculture, respecting animal welfare and the natural environment. It is also important to favour fish caught close to where one operates (for example, in Alsace, salmon trout or sea bream are to be preferred).
